In a devastating rail incident near Balasore city in Odisha state, India, on Friday evening, three trains collided, resulting in a tragic loss of at least 295 lives and leaving over 1,175 individuals injured. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has stated that an error in the electronic interlocking of signals is believed to be the cause of the crash.
The collision occurred around 7 pm local time (13:30 GMT) on the Howrah–Chennai Main Line, close to the Bahanaga Bazar railway station. Two passenger trains, namely the 12841 Coromandel Express (traveling between Shalimar and MGR Chennai Central) and the 12864 SMVT Bengaluru–Howrah SF Express (operating between SMVT Bengaluru and Howrah), collided with a stationary freight train on an adjacent track. As a result of the impact, the Coromandel Express derailed and struck the freight train, while the SMVT Bengaluru–Howrah SF Express collided with the wreckage. Multiple coaches were severely damaged and crushed in the collision.
The rescue operation involved the concerted efforts of over 200 ambulances, hundreds of medical professionals, and emergency personnel. Additionally, local villagers provided invaluable assistance in extricating survivors and retrieving bodies from the twisted wreckage. The injured were swiftly transported to nearby hospitals, while the deceased were identified and taken for post-mortem examinations. The unaffected portion of the SMVT Bengaluru–Howrah SF Express continued its journey to Howrah after detaching the damaged coach.
The Railway Minister, paying a visit to the accident site on Saturday, expressed his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families. He also announced a compensation of Rs 10 lakh ($13,500) for each of the deceased, Rs 5 lakh ($6,750) for each seriously injured person, and Rs 1 lakh ($1,350) for each minor injury. He assured that a high-level inquiry has been initiated to determine the precise cause of the accident and assign accountability.
This accident ranks as the fourth deadliest rail disaster of the 21st century and stands as India's most catastrophic rail crash since the Firozabad rail disaster in 1995, which claimed 358 lives. The incident has cast doubts on the safety measures and maintenance practices within India's extensive railway network, responsible for ferrying over 20 million passengers daily. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to visit the injured individuals later on Saturday and address the nation regarding this tragic event.
