Bill Gates, the co-founder of Microsoft, has predicted that the future of technology lies in the development of the top artificially intelligent agent, a computer assistant that can handle a range of tasks for users by speech or text.
Gates made the bold statement at AI Forward 2023, an event in San Francisco hosted by Goldman Sachs and SV Angel on Monday. He said that such an AI agent would disrupt the existing search-engine, productivity and online shopping businesses.
“You’ll never go to a search site again,” he said. “You’ll never go to Amazon.”
Gates said he would be disappointed if Microsoft were not in the running for creating the top AI agent, but he also acknowledged that there was a 50% chance that the winner would be a startup.
He mentioned Inflection AI, a company co-founded by entrepreneur Reid Hoffman, as one that impressed him. Inflection AI claims to be building a “personalized AI assistant for everyone”.
A new era of AI
The idea of a personal AI agent is not new. Several tech giants, such as Google, Amazon and Apple, have already developed their own versions of voice-activated assistants, such as Google Assistant, Alexa and Siri.
However, these assistants are still limited in their capabilities and often rely on specific platforms or devices. Gates envisions a more powerful and versatile AI agent that can perform complex tasks across domains and devices.
For example, such an AI agent could help users book flights, order food, shop online, manage their finances, schedule appointments, play games, learn new skills and more.
Gates said that whoever wins the race to create the top AI agent would have a huge advantage in the technology industry.
“Whoever wins the personal agent, that’s a big thing,” he said.
