Waterloo, ON – The Edna Staebler Award for Creative Non-Fiction, Canada’s only award of its kind, has announced its 2021 shortlist following a one-year postponement due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The three shortlisted books are:
- The Marrow Thieves by Cherie Dimaline (House of Anansi Press)
- The Way Back to Where We Belong by Catherine Hernandez (Arsenal Pulp Press)
- All the Names They Gave Me by Akwaeke Emezi (Grove Atlantic)
The winner of the 2021 Edna Staebler Award for Creative Non-Fiction will be announced on September 22, 2023, at a ceremony in Waterloo, Ontario.
The Edna Staebler Award for Creative Non-Fiction was established in 1991 by writer and literary journalist Edna Staebler. The award recognizes a Canadian writer of a first or second published book with a Canadian locale and/or significance. The award is valued at $10,000.
The 2021 shortlist was selected by a jury of five judges:
- Diana Athill, award-winning British writer and editor
- Michael Ondaatje, Nobel Prize-winning poet and novelist
- Alissa York, author of the novel The Rules of Magic
- Sandra Birdsell, author of the novel The Last of the Mohicans
- Thomas King, award-winning author of the novel Medicine River
The Edna Staebler Award for Creative Non-Fiction is administered by Wilfrid Laurier University’s Faculty of Arts.
About the Authors
Cherie Dimaline is a member of the Chippewas of the Thames First Nation. She is the author of the novels The Marrow Thieves and Empire of Wild, as well as the short story collection A Gentle Remedy for Tropical Ills. Her work has been published in numerous magazines and journals, including The Walrus, Prism International, and The Malahat Review. She is the recipient of the Rogers Writers’ Trust Fiction Prize, the Canada Reads People’s Choice Award, and the McNally Robinson Book of the Year Award.
Catherine Hernandez is a writer, playwright, and filmmaker. She is the author of the novel The Way Back to Where We Belong, which won the Toronto Book Award and the Rogers Writers’ Trust Fiction Prize. She is also the author of the play Zora, which won the Dora Mavor Moore Award for Outstanding New Play. Hernandez is a member of the Writers’ Trust of Canada’s Emerging Writers’ Mentorship Program and the Playwrights Guild of Canada.
Akwaeke Emezi is a writer from Nigeria. They are the author of the novels Freshwater, Pet, and The Death of Vivek Oji. Their work has been published in The New Yorker, Granta, The Paris Review, and The Atlantic. Emezi is a recipient of the Lambda Literary Award for Transgender Fiction, the Hurston/Wright Legacy Award for Debut Fiction, and the PEN/Hemingway Award for Debut Novel.
