At least 12 people have died and more than 100 have been injured in a crowd crush at a football stadium in El Salvador on Saturday, according to the government.
The incident occurred during a match between local team Alianza and Santa Ana based team Fas at the Monumental stadium in San Salvador, the country’s capital.
The match was suspended after 16 minutes of play when a large number of fans tried to enter the venue after the gates had been closed, causing a stampede.
“It was an avalanche of fans who overran the gate,” a volunteer with the Rescue Commandos first aid group told journalists. “Some were still under the metal in the tunnel. Others managed to make it to the stands and then to the field and were smothered.”
Police said seven men and two women were among the dead, with all the victims over the age of 18.
The president of El Salvador, Nayib Bukele, said he had ordered a “thorough investigation” into the events at the stadium and vowed to punish those responsible.
“Everyone will be investigated: teams, managers, stadium, box office, league, federation, etc,” Bukele wrote on Twitter. “Whoever the culprits are, they will not go unpunished.”
The Salvadoran Football Federation expressed its “deep regret” over the tragedy and announced that it had suspended the tournament until further notice.
The Cuscatlan stadium is one of the largest stadiums in Central America and has an official capacity of more than 44,000 fans.
Officials said they would investigate reports of fake match tickets being sold and whether there was adequate security at the venue.
The country’s health minister, Francisco Alabi, said that about 500 people had been given medical treatment at the stadium, with around 100 of those transferred to nearby hospitals.
He said that most of those injured were in a stable condition and that there had been no reports of deaths from hospitals.
The tragedy has shocked the football world and prompted messages of condolence from several clubs and players.
Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid both posted on Twitter their “condolences and affection” to the families and friends of the victims.
“Rest in peace,” Atlético Madrid wrote.
